For the first time in Irish motoring history, electric vehicles have become the number one choice for new car buyers, according to the latest figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).
The data shows a 60% year-on-year surge in EV registrations, with more than 28,600 new electric cars registered in the first seven months of 2026. That gives EVs a market-leading 25.9% share, ahead of hybrid, petrol and diesel vehicles combined. July alone saw a remarkable 98% increase in EV sales compared to the same month last year, signalling that Ireland's shift to electric is no longer a slow transition, it's well underway.
The growth has been driven by a combination of factors, including continued SEAI grant support, the introduction of a new EV Scrappage Scheme, and a rapidly expanding public charging network that's making electric ownership more practical across the country, not just in cities.
