Range Rover Electric: A New Era for the Original Luxury SUV

Range Rover has confirmed that its first ever fully electric model, Range Rover Electric, is now available to order. Built at the brand's historic Solihull plant in the UK, the model marks the most significant technical shift in Range Rover's history while staying true to its design philosophy of being "a Range Rover first and electric second."

Performance and Capability

Range Rover Electric is powered by twin 260kW permanent-magnet electric motors, delivering up to 550PS and 850Nm of torque, more power and torque than any Range Rover before it. The car can go from 0-60mph in as little as 4.3 seconds, and overtaking bursts from 50-75mph take just 2.7 seconds.

Despite the shift to electric power, off-road capability hasn't been compromised. A new Integrated Traction Management system reacts to changes in grip within 50 milliseconds, around 100 times faster than a combustion engine equivalent, while a new Single Pedal mode allows drivers to smoothly climb slopes of up to 45 degrees. The car retains Range Rover's renowned wading depth of up to 900mm, and a lower centre of gravity paired with twin-chamber air suspension is designed to sharpen on-road handling as well.

Battery, Range and Charging

At the heart of the car is a double-stacked 118.5kWh battery built on 800-volt architecture, giving an official range of up to 372 miles (WLTP), or a real-world figure of around 333 miles. Using the fastest public rapid chargers, the battery can go from 10-80% in approximately 22 minutes, or add around 137 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

A new thermal management system, branded ThermAssist, helps optimise range, charging speed and battery health in extreme temperatures, reportedly adding up to 25 miles of extra range and cutting heating-related energy use by 40%. Every Range Rover Electric also comes with a "Battery Digital Twin," monitoring over 900 data points to support proactive maintenance via over-the-air software updates.

Design and Everyday Use

True to Range Rover's reductive design language, Range Rover Electric looks unmistakably like a Range Rover, with only subtle changes, an aerodynamically optimised grille, dedicated wheel designs and a tailored underbody, introduced to maximise efficiency and range.

Owners can stay connected to the vehicle through the Range Rover App, which allows remote control of cabin air purification and the heated steering wheel, checks on lock status, live location tracking, and monitoring of charge level and predicted range. The app also supports scheduled charging to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates. A new home charger is available as an optional extra, and public charging network access includes over one million charge points across the UK and Europe.

Rigorous Testing

Range Rover Electric has undergone the most extensive testing programme of any model in the brand's history: more than 1.5 million kilometres of physical testing and over 250,000 hours of combined physical and virtual development. Testing took place in extremes ranging from -40°C in Arjeplog, Sweden, to the heat of the Dubai desert, as well as JLR's own Eastnor Castle proving ground in the UK.

The model is expected to become the most patented Range Rover ever built, with over 300 patent applications filed covering new technologies including its battery, motors and thermal management systems.

What This Means for Range Rover

Speaking about the launch, Range Rover Managing Director Martin Limpert described the model as the product of a decade of engineering work, noting that the brand pushed its testing programme further than originally planned to ensure it was genuinely the most capable Range Rover yet. JLR Vehicle Engineering Director Matt Becker highlighted the car's composure across all terrain types, crediting the precision of the new electric driveline systems. JLR Chief Operations Officer Nigel Blenkinsop pointed to the significance of building the car in Solihull, combining decades of manufacturing expertise with new electrification technology, and noted that Range Rover production continues to support thousands of businesses across the UK and Europe.

Specification and Ordering

Range Rover Electric is available to order now in standard and long-wheelbase body styles, across SE, HSE, Autobiography, SV, SV Ultra and SV Black specifications. A curated First Edition launch model is also offered, finished in a choice of three exterior colours with a newly introduced Light Cloud interior trim. Clients seeking further personalisation can turn to the Range Rover Bespoke commissioning service for an extended range of colours, materials and finishing details.

Built in Solihull

Production takes place at JLR's Solihull facility, the home of Range Rover since 1970, now upgraded to build electric, plug-in hybrid, mild-hybrid and combustion models side by side on the same line. Around 9,000 manufacturing staff at Solihull have been upskilled for electrification, alongside a further 1,500 employees across JLR's wider West Midlands operations.

Supporting production, JLR's Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton now builds battery packs and electric drive units alongside combustion engines, following a major four-year redevelopment involving more than two million hours of planning and construction.
